The results showed soil from organic farms is 26 percent better at retaining carbon - and retaining it for longer periods of time - than soil that's farmed with conventional methods and synthetic fertilizers. Another way to look at the difference: A recent analysis of soil information from around the world found that, on average, organically managed soil releases 492 kilograms (1,084 pounds) less carbon dioxide per hectare per year than conventionally managed soil.
